The rules of “proper street photography” are often discussed among the photography fraternity and what constitutes “proper street photography” hotly debated. The type of lens that should be used, (zoom lenses are discouraged); whether black & white or colour should be used; the subjects and even the make of camera can be the subject of lengthy discussion.
My philosophy is very simple in regards to street photography; If I take a picture on the street, it’s street photography regardless of the lens or camera I use (although I don’t tend to carry a zoom lens when on the street). I believe that the end result is what matters and how you get there is often analysed to death.
Street photography is very different from landscape photography for example in that it is much more dynamic. There are several subjects available at any given time and, very often, the trick is deciding what picture to take. This can be the best thing about street photography but can also frustrate because it can make you feel like you are missing more than you are getting. There is often not a lot of time to think when taking pictures on the street and using your instincts can be the best thing to do.
These pictures fall into what I consider to be street photography. They were taken in several cities including Dublin, New York and Brussels. I hope you like at least some of them.
